Ultimate in Schools
At the most recent NZU Board meeting, the board identified the Juniors/Schools area as a key focus for the next couple of years. Well run schools programmes will see the growth of our player base as they filter through universities and begin playing in our regional and national competitions/events. This is likely to be the most robust way to steadily grow the number of people involved in our sport.
As a start to this process, Jacob Tapiata has kindly volunteered to lead a project to look into some ideas and plans in the schools/juniors area, with a view to trying to pool together knowledge and initiatives that have been tried or are successful all around the country. There are a lot of separate things happening in this area, and a lot to be gained by pooling and refining this knowledge.
If you are interested at all the subject of juniors ultimate or ultimate in schools, whether you are a younger player, teacher, sports coordinator, or just want to help out, get yourself signed up to NZU's 'schools' ultimate list, where any further discussion of this subject will be carried on. You can do so by visiting this website and inputting your email address:
http://lists.ultimate.org.nz/mailman/listinfo/nzu_schools
The general plan is for a general discussion about ideas. From there Jacob will liaise with a more focused group, and the report back to the list for further discussion. Some kind of forum or discussion will also be organised to occur at Indoor Nationals, to allow a more face-to-face discussion, but more on this will be sorted out over the coming weeks/months.
NZU owes a huge thank you to Jacob for assisting in this process, and hopefully we can move forward soon with a strategy to promote juniors ultimate in NZ.
Reminder - if you wish to be further involved in the discussion on this subject, sign up to the 'schools' list.
Thanks and regards,
Iain Stewart

Here is a copy of the results of the player survey I did as follow up to the NZ Squad going to Perth. Basically I think the results showed that the administrators and leaders did some fantastic stuff in preparation for Perth and during the tournament . People could really see the need to support the leaders more and want to help out more next time to spread the workload. Those who had a non-playing coach really appreciated it and those who didn't would have really valued having one, particularly those on inexperienced teams.
I hope the points can be used to assist in future Worlds preparation.
Cheers

WaM Tour 2 - Christchurch 4-March Action:
Check out more of Neil's pics from the weekend.
Canterbury had a good day, with local teams winning both the Women's and Open
divisions... The open final was very close, with Chch digging really deep to
take out the final. After pulling out a good lead early on, Bluefish came
back and BF finally took the lead just into cap, going ahead and actually
having game point with the disc in their possession 5 metres from their
zone, with the wind at their backs.
But a clean handblock (sorry I missed the hero) by Chch and a quick upwind
point brought Chch level to the jubilation of the crowd.
The pressure then showed and Bluefish coughed up the disc on their own line
through a simple error and Chch pounced - making a short simple pass for
victory.
Both teams played great and it was a joy to watch.
Cheers - N

Kia Ora Everyone
I hope you all had a nice Chirstmas break and will have a good new years.
In all the hussle and bussle of the silly season don’t forget that the Auckland tour event is coming up on the 20th and 21st of January. Entries close Friday 12th Jan! Likely cost is $225 per team as well $10 NZU levy per player.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to sort out accommodation at the AUT hostel (just across the road from the fields) yet but I am hopeful of having it sorted out in the first week of the new year.
Thanks, look forward to hearing from you,
- Sherif
