Check out more of Neil's pics from the weekend.
Canterbury had a good day, with local teams winning both the Women's and Open divisions... The open final was very close, with Chch digging really deep to take out the final. After pulling out a good lead early on, Bluefish came back and BF finally took the lead just into cap, going ahead and actually having game point with the disc in their possession 5 metres from their zone, with the wind at their backs.
But a clean handblock (sorry I missed the hero) by Chch and a quick upwind point brought Chch level to the jubilation of the crowd.
The pressure then showed and Bluefish coughed up the disc on their own line through a simple error and Chch pounced - making a short simple pass for victory.
Both teams played great and it was a joy to watch.
Cheers - N

Kia Ora Everyone
I hope you all had a nice Chirstmas break and will have a good new years.
In all the hussle and bussle of the silly season don’t forget that the Auckland tour event is coming up on the 20th and 21st of January. Entries close Friday 12th Jan! Likely cost is $225 per team as well $10 NZU levy per player.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to sort out accommodation at the AUT hostel (just across the road from the fields) yet but I am hopeful of having it sorted out in the first week of the new year.
Thanks, look forward to hearing from you,
- Sherif

"2006 Indoor Nationals was amazing". A grade playoffs ended up
1. Princess Brides, 2.Oceans A, 3.Credo & 4.Oceans B.
3 Palmerston North teams in the semis - while past champions SPY and regular semi-finalists Psycho-Kittens were relegated to playing off for minor placings.
Credo were crowned national champions and managed to spoil the home town party by taking out the final - but beware those Palmy teams this outdoor season!

The dates for the National tournament series are as follows:
After a lot of work by the Board of New Zealand Ultimate, the NZFDA filed an application for ‘Recognised Sport’ status with Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) – the sport funding arm of the government. This recognition will cover ultimate and disc golf so we are waiting with baited breath for the outcome of the application.
Auckland Ultimate (AU) became New Zealand Ultimate’s (NZU) first recognised organisational member in October. This status means that NZU recognises AU as the regional governing body for the sport in Auckland. Hopefully this will also open some funding doors for AU and also provide more legitimacy in its dealings with organisations outside the sport. If your organisation wishes to become an organisational member of NZU, please feel free to contact the board to discuss this option.
Congratulations to Dave Campbell from Wellington who was the successful applicant for the Tournaments Coordinator position assisting the NZU Board. Dave will look after the coordination of all of NZU’s national tournament for the 2005/2006 season, helping the local TDs to produce some consistently great tournaments. NZU thanks Dave for putting his hand up to help out and look forward to some great events this summer.
Speaking of NZU tournaments, a full announcement is due shortly, confirming the dates and venues of all of the 2005/2006 season. As you will have seen on regional email lists, Adele Gibson has called for entries for the 1st Mixed event, in Wellington on December 10-11.
NZU hope to shortly confirm dates and venues for the remaining three events currently scheduled so that you can all book airfares and accommodation. Remember that there is still the possibility of organizing a 3rd Mens/Womens events in early May, subject to demand. A couple of Aussie teams have already expressed an interest in coming over to NZ after their nationals tournament so it could be a great event. Further interest will be looked for at the upcoming national events before a decision is made.
WFDF have released the initial bids for World Ultimate Club Championships 2006 in Perth. New Zealand have been allocated the following bids:
1 Open
2 Women
3 Mixed
1 Masters
The Board of NZU are working with those people who expressed an interesting in sending a team earlier in the year so that we can hopefully take up all of our allocation.
WFDF have also just released the rules regarding eligibility for WUCC2006. The Board of NZU are currently going through this document to work out what it means to New Zealand teams and will release more information once this process is finished. NZU will continue to work closely with interested teams to ensure that their rosters comply with the rules.

Player allocations (XLS 12k). Shows how many players from each class you are allowed for any given squad size.
New Zealand’s biggest ultimate tournament, the Indoor National Championships 2005, has flown by for another year. In the closest competition yet, some 200 competitors across 10 A grade and 16 social teams contested this year’s event. Worth special mention was the four teams from the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty area competing in the social grade as well as the high number of high school students competing across three teams.
