Bronze for NZ in Philippines!

NZ Beach Ultimate

NZ was represented at the inaugural Asian Champions of Beach Ultimate (ACBU) held in the Philippines in Oct/Nov 2009. It was held at the truly beautiful Boracay Island, hosted by the indomitable Boracay Dragons. Those guys don't have it too bad! Many of them own bars or are otherwise associated with the tourist industry in the Philippines' best and exclusive holiday island. The Boracays competed in the 2009 Beach Worlds in Brazil, coming 2nd in Open 14-12 to the Aussies; and then reversed that result in ACBU. Not only are they phenomenal on the beach - they are also great hosts - free alcohol all week (a Filipino ultimate tradition I am told), and terrific free accommodation (I think I got lucky - I had a luxury chalet, surrounded by several swimming pools with entertainment areas, and in-house beach-side bar and restaurant)! Our tournament finished on Halloween - yes, there was an absolute ripper of a fancy dress party - and with thousands of other island visitors determined to have a wild night sharing the fun! The Aussies definitely won the party. They had that won by about night two! Oh yeah there was some sport as well. I think. NZ got bronze in Mixed!

I can only say the best about this amazing tournament, the exquisite venue, and the really great hosts. Highly recommended, if you like holidays in paradise. Advice? Allow an extra day in your air travel, Philippines has a lot of typhoons; and allow time to learn to dive, its one of the best locations in the world. Speaking of typhoons, one blew past during our final! We could see it coming, up north it hit Manila and killed a few people, but just touched us. One minute beautiful, then a wall of dark clouds, then some of the coldest rain I've ever been in, really high winds, everyone soaked in an instant, and running for cover! With our Wellingtonian captain being very experienced with high winds, of course, we very nearly took the game in those few minutes! So close... just needed a bit more typhoon... !

For an idea of the fun and beauty, check some photos.

Asian Championships of Beach Ultimate : 28-31 October 2009

ACBU Players Needed!

Call for NZ players to represent NZ at the inaugural Asian Championships of Beach Ultimate (ACBU)! 28-31 October 2009, at beautiful Boracay Beach in the Philippines. Mixed teams, glorious sun and sand, teams from many Asian countries. We need more players for our team! Philippines is very cheap, and is an vast archipelago of islands, beaches, ferries and diversity. I'm guessing its a beach lovers' and backpackers' paradise! And it has all the excellent shopping and food one expects anywhere in Asia. Qantas have good direct routes, or fly via another Asian destination (eg Singapore, Jakarta) and make the most of your time away.
