2008-9 NZU Mixed Nationals

The 2008 NZU Mixed Nats held in Christchurch 13-14 Dec 2008

The New Zealand Ultimate Mixed Nationals 2008-09, held at Nunweek Park, Christchurch this past weekend saw ten teams from around New Zealand (and some Australian imports) battle it out for the title of New Zealand Ultimate Mixed Nationals Champions.  There were three teams each from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch respectively, and one from Nelson.  This team, mostly made up of high school students, put pressure on teams that were seeded much higher than them and demonstrated the high level of talent among the juniors playing ultimate in New Zealand.

The weather was kind, although the wind picked up on Sunday, and saw more zone defence being played than on Saturday.  There were a lot of close and spirited games and, as Neil Gardner’s photographs show, some intense playing.  The final was a closely fought game between Credo (Christchurch) and Mega Racoon Pussi Pouch (mostly Aucklanders, with some Australians and one Christchurch player), with Credo wining.  The final score (15-8) did not reflect the closely contested nature of the game.  Ethos (also from Christchurch) won spirit, Who’s Who (Auckland) won the plate and the Aussies claim to have won the party…
